School Days

Exhibited in the Singleton - Zinsser Gallery, Fall 2004

Education in Amherst County took many different forms in the late nineteenth century and throughout much of the twentieth century. Earlier schools tended to be small, often serving the immediate community or sometimes a tutor was engaged to teach a family's children and occasionally including a neighboring family. Such was the 1885 Tyler log school, originally part of the Duckbill farm, later moved to the Amherst County Museum. As compared with the 2005 Amherst County High School one can only imagine that changes in philosophy and curriculum have changed as dramatically as physical size.

1907 maps

Mapcases such as the one shown at left were in common use in many classrooms in the early and mid-twentieth century. In addition to maps of Asia, Africa, both Americas and Europe, this set also included a map of the United States. When this map was printed in 1907 New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii had not yet been admitted to statehood. Oklahoma acquired statehood in late 1907.

The dress displayed at right was worn by Buelah Bailey Thornton on the occasion of her graduation from Pleasant View High School in 1929. To keep her memories of her high school days, Beulah collected autographs from her friends and classmates in a "Special Memories" book. Both items were donated by Mrs. Josephine Woods
